Mission and objectives

UNFPA is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. Our mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled. UNFPA’s goal is to achieve universal access to sexual and reproductive health, realize reproductive rights, and reduce maternal mortality to accelerate progress on the ICPD agenda, to improve the lives of adolescents and youth, and women, enabled by population dynamics, human rights, and gender equality. In 2018, UNFPA launched efforts to achieve three transformative results, ambitions that promise to change the world for every man, woman and young person: 1.) Ending unmet need for family planning 2.) Ending preventable maternal death 3.) Ending gender-based violence and harmful practises UNFPA recognizes that innovation is a key accelerator to achieve these results. UNFPA will harness innovation to meet tomorrow’s challenges and boost its impact, especially in addressing furthest behind populations, and leverage opportunities, social capital, funding and technology by (a) strengthening the corporate innovation architecture and capabilities, (b) scaling up innovations that have proven to be effective and impactful, (c) forming new partnerships and connecting with relevant innovation ecosystems, (d) strengthening and leveraging financing for innovation, and (e) expanding communities and culture for innovation.

Context

As part of Delivering as One, the UN Country Team has established a UN Communications Group (UNCG) to be a strong unifying platform for dealing with common communication challenges facing the UN in Angola. All UN agencies in Angola adhere to the UNCG principles of communications. Accordingly, the Communications, Partnerships, and Resource Mobilisation Unit in the (United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Office, intends to promote effective advocacy for its mandate and its mission; and publicize its program, projects, and results of its activities. To realize this, the services of a National UN Volunteer Social Media Associate will be valuable

Task description

Within the terms of the organization’s delegated authority, and under the direct supervision of the National Officer Communications, Partnerships, and Resource Mobilisation, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

Social Media

  • Contribute to the development of a social media strategy for the Country Office;
  • Continuously monitor the social media environment, identify opportunities, and develop ideas for engagement;
  • Manage and analyze the state of the UNFPA website, Facebook page, Twitter account, and YouTube channel
  • Manage social media networks to monitor discussions with UNFPA and topics about UNFPA’s mandate and activities
  • Work closely with UNFPA Programme Units to use social networks within their programme;
  • Produce content, manage discussions, and evaluate the social media accounts/page performance
  • Draft posts for different accounts and prepare engaging social media packages for International days, Specific events, and other occasions, targeting different audiences, including donors
  • Coordinate the development of creative, innovative, and engaging audio-visual content for use on social media, including video and infographics/data visualization with the Graphic Designer. •
  • Coordinate social media content and messages with partner organizations;
  • Monitor and analyze social media user data and make proposals for adjustments, as necessary
  • Coach colleagues on the use of personal social media accounts, in line with UNFPA policy • Develop communication materials and content targeted at donors • Support the organization and presentation of knowledge products
  • Support the implementation and scaling-up of innovation initiatives

Represent UNFPA in relevant One UN in Angola Working Groups

  • Contribute actively to joint communications initiatives, including for the joint UN and Regional communications materials
  • Set aside dedicated time for capacity development through coaching, mentoring, and formal and on-the-job training while working with national staff or (non-)governmental counterparts, including Implementing Partners (IPs).

Required experience

  • 3 years of experience in communication and social media management in a development context
  • Excellent drafting skills, with experience in advocacy. Convey messages in a very simple, yet inspiring way.
  • Fully proficient in Portuguese. Working knowledge of English is required.
  • Be capable of taking initiative and coping under pressure.
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications
  • Be fully proficient in most used social media platforms
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines Excellent skills in photography and video editing.
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel
  • Have affinity with or interest in humanitarian relief, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System
  • The incumbent must be a dynamic, multi-functional person, who supports UNFPA with professionalism, dedication, and client orientation.
